Music and Gender

After really thinking about this and what came to mind was female rappers. Personally, In my opinion , when I hear the word rapper, I always thought of male rappers and that's not me trying to be nasty or anything but It just the first gender that comes to my mind but when I really think about Rappers, I realized that there are some women Rappers who have changed the Industry for rapping and not just for women. The first women rapper that comes to my mind is Nicki Minaj. She is considered the best women rapper to ever be as well as one of the best rappers of all time. She is the only female rapper to win the best female Hip-Hop artist awards seven years in a row as well as winning overall 11 awards out of twenty-nine nominations. She has had countless songs hit the number 1 on the charts as well as making someone of the worlds most famous songs such Starships which is i believe very well known in America as well as Europe. She was born in Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad and Tobago, she is also known for her distinctive voice, special personality and style. She is often celebrated for breaking gender norms in rapping culture for her bold lyrics and assertive persona which has redefined the expectations of female rappers. Not only is she an icon for rapping but also for her fashion choices, she uses her platform to address issues of race, sexuality and empowerment and a lot of her lyrics in songs celebrate female empowerment and challenge stereotypes , which many young women look up to her because of this. Because of how rap music is, she has faced criticism for her explicit lyrics and bold persona, which often male artists are not criticized for, but she uses this to her advantage to perform better and become well known for how she reacts to diversity which is shown in her songs. Nicki Minaj impact on music and culture has paved the way for new generation female rappers proving  that women can dominate rap just as much as men do. All of her awards speak volume of how hard she has worked and how diversity doesnt affect her but thrives her to be better.

This second video shows how talented she is and how good she is at rapping and it is obvious how she has become so successful in the rapping industry

  1. Hi Harry, Nicki Minaj is actually one of the first few rappers I remember listening to growing up. She really broke out in the early 2010s and is known as the 'Queen of Rap' for a reason. She was one of the first few female rappers to really garner the amount of success that she has. Like you said, not only is she super talented, but it's her infectious personality that keeps her popular. She'll definitely go down in history as one of the greatest rappers of all time.
